AI-driven multi-modal sensing, digital twin modeling, and autonomous swarm coordination for early detection of self-accelerating thermal decomposition in fertilizer storage and transport.
Preventing the next Beirut. Protecting global food security.
From Texas City (1947) to Toulouse (2001) to Beirut (2020), ammonium nitrate explosions have claimed thousands of lives. Historical analysis of 51 major incidents across 20+ countries reveals a critical pattern: the vast majority were preceded by hours or days of detectable thermal decomposition before catastrophic failure.
Current monitoring relies on single-threshold alarms and isolated sensors. These systems detect too late. The critical variable is time — time to intervene before decomposition reaches runaway. Our system buys that time through simultaneous detection across chemical, thermal, and structural regimes.

Gulf nations account for a significant share of globally traded nitrogen fertilizers. The Strait of Hormuz concentrates approximately 20% of global oil and gas trade and up to 30% of fertilizer flows. A disruption would trigger supply tightening, extended storage durations, and shifts in material quality — conditions that directly increase susceptibility to self-sustaining decomposition.
Extended storage, moisture uptake, contamination, and formulation variability alter the thermal behavior of ammonium-nitrate-based fertilizers. The convergence of geopolitical instability and material science risk creates an urgent need for intelligent, predictive monitoring — not reactive threshold alarms.
